Justbuytravel | 5 Unique Things to Do in Geneva

You might know Geneva for the United Nations office and for the diplomacy hub it is; but trust me, there is so much more to it! If you’re planning a trip and wondering what is there to do in Geneva, let me tell you, it’s not all suits and secret bank accounts.

I spent really chaotic, espresso-fueled days in this Swiss gem and discovered that this city has a lot more than just scenic postcard shots. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Geneva that go beyond the usual “take a photo of the Jet d’Eau and leave,” let me be your quirky guide. Here’s what to see and do in Geneva Switzerland — my way.

1. Swim at Baby Plage (Yes, Geneva Has a Beach!)

Where: Quai Gustave-Ador, near Parc La Grange
Cost: Free

Did you know there are actual beaches in Geneva, Switzerland? I didn’t know that until I stumbled upon this public lakeside beach just a 10-minute stroll from the city center. I showed up in jeans and ended up swimming still. Zero regrets.

The best part is not just that the water is extremely clean and swimmable; but also the fact that Lake Geneva is filled with both in-the-know travellers and locals. The willow trees are huge and the wooden sculptures are more like playground equipment. It’s free yay! Don’t miss the sunrise

2. Climb St. Pierre Cathedral

Where: Place du Bourg-de-Four 24, Old Town Geneva
Cost: CHF 7 for tower access

If things to see and do in Geneva, Switzerland include a bit of leg day — climb the towers of St. Pierre Cathedral. The staircases are spiral, which makes it seem like a drone shot. You’re not supposed to ring the bells but I rang and ran; would not recommend it!

The cathedral is quite famous because of its connection to John Calvin, a key figure in Protestant Reformation. I did pretend to be a reverent but my focus was taking selfies with the 360-degree view and the iconic Alps!

3. Sip Coffee With Cats at Le Chat Noir

Where: Rue Vautier 13, Carouge (a must-visit boho neighborhood)
Cost: CHF 4.50 for coffee

Don’t get confused, there is also a nightclub with the same name. This Le Chat Noir is a hidden gem in the heart of Carouge, the Swiss version of a Parisian village. If you’re looking for offbeat Geneva stuff to do, Voilà, you’ve found it!

This cute little café/bookstore hybrid on Rue Vautier is cozy and weird in just the right ways. It’s tiny, packed with books and home to two snobbish cats who judge your order. I ordered a café crème and tried to pet the cat, but he turned his back on me. I respected that.

4. Ride the Mouettes (Water Taxis) Like a Local

You have to try these cute little yellow water taxis! As part of Geneva’s public transport system, they take you across the lake for a couple of francs. I used one to get from Eaux-Vives to the Pâquis area and felt like I was in an indie Euro film.

The locals use them for commutes. But they are also a budget friendly way to feel the breeze on your face and witness the pretty mountain views. After all, you don’t need a pricey lake cruise. Pro tip: Go around golden hour, the light over the lake is absolute magic.

5. Watch Sunset From Bains des Pâquis and Eat Fondue

Where: Quai du Mont-Blanc 30, Geneva
Cost: CHF 2 for entry; CHF 25 for fondue dinner

Ah yes, the grand finale: Bains des Pâquis, a lakeside pier-turned-bathhouse where you can sauna, sunbathe, and eat fondue all year round. I had a solo date there and it was romantic anyway! I had a glass of wine at around 7 PM and watched the sun melt behind Mont Blanc. The ducks were quackling below and I was dipping my bread into bubbling cheese, how surreal!

This place is known for not just its artsy and communal vibes but also for how affordable it is! In summer, locals sunbathe here during lunch breaks. In winter, there’s fondue by firelight. It’s where the city’s heart really beats.

Finally, the tourist places in Geneva, Switzerland will surprise you if you dig a little deeper. Sure, the population of Geneva might hover around 200,000, but the personality feels a lot bigger when you ditch the brochure and go off-script.

From swimming in a beach to chatting with cats in Carouge, this city offers you a cute little mix of clean order and surprising weirdness! Bring comfy shoes, an open mind, and a towel (trust me, you’ll want to swim). You’ll leave Geneva with fondue breath and stories to tell.
