When I landed in the capital of Qatar, I was expecting camels and falafels. But going around the city made me realise that it is so much more than desert sands and date palms. If you’re a lover of geometry or just want to stand under a chandelier and admire art, the Museum of Islamic Art will leave you in awe! Designed by I.M. Pei (the same genius behind the Louvre Pyramid), this is so much more than a building.
You’ll find old manuscripts, shimmering ceramics and swords that would make John Snow Jealous! Also, the view of Doha skyline is so mesmerising; you must not miss the golden hour. Pro tip: The sun is quite strong in Doha, so don’t forget to pack your cap and shades.

Cost: Free to enter, but budgeting 50-100 QAR for food and souvenirs is wise.
This vibrant market is a must on any list of what to see in Doha. I went there and found the most beautiful Turkish lamps and handmade perfumes. I also had the best chicken machboos. For dessert, don’t miss the fresh kunafa or pistachio-stuffed dates; they’re tiny bites of heaven.Those were the most memorable three hours of my life. I can’t play a drum but ended up buying that too!
The street is quite lit with live music and street performers. You can just sit there and watch locals in flowing thobes and curious travelers snapping photos. Meanwhile, sip on some karak tea.

If you want to feel glamorous on a yacht, head to The Pearl-Qatar. It’s basically the ‘Doha’ version of Monte-Carlo, with pastel buildings, supercars, and waterside cafés serving croissants. This is the ideal place to visit with your partner because the breezy doha weather makes it extra romantic.
Instagram-worthy things to see in Doha? Well, take a walk along Porto Arabia maria. I mean, what could be better than watching the sunset over a row of luxury boats? The cool breeze and calm vibes will rejuvenate you. If you’re feeling fancy, hop on a Dhow boat cruise around the marina or even book a private yacht ride.
Where: Al Thakira Mangroves (near Al Khor, about 1 hour from Doha)
Cost: Around 200 QAR for a guided kayak tour
Want to add something unexpected to your time in Doha? Take a break from the skyscrapers and go to these lush green mangroves. I joined a sunrise kayak tour, which was quite peaceful but also funny because I struggled with it.
The green tunnels are so silent and you can even spot flamingos doing their awkward little walk. The tour guide was sweet enough to get me dates and Arabic coffee, which almost made me feel like I’m in a National Geographic picnic!

Doha, Qatar, also has a lot of culture and drama that you cannot miss! One night, you can enjoy the open-air Jazz club. The next night, you can munch on pistachio ice cream and visit a Turkish art exhibit. From an opera house to amphitheatre, Katara Cultural Village is worth exploring. You can even take a salty detour and take a dip at the beach.
From film screenings to food festivals, there’s always something happening here. Plus, the architecture? Straight out of a Wes Anderson dream. I went there as a kid and watching the sunset at Katara beach was so entertaining, all because a small child was trying to bury his dad in the sand…
Finally, you can never run out of things to do in Doha, from relishing art at the museums to eating unique authentic food. The Islamic architecture is marvelous and the desert adventures are equally fun. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Doha for a 12-hour layover or a full-blown vacation, it will surprise you regardless. Put your sunglasses on.
